Symptoms that should be assessed

What root-canal treatment may involve

Root-canal treatment aims to remove inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth, clean and shape the canal spaces, and seal them. Depending on the tooth and clinical findings, treatment may occur over more than one stage.

An interim restoration may be used between stages. After the canal treatment is complete, the tooth needs a suitable final restoration. A crown may sometimes be discussed for a weakened tooth, but this depends on the remaining tooth structure, bite and other findings.

Alternatives and referral

Options depend on diagnosis and may include monitoring only where clinically appropriate, root-canal treatment, extraction, specialist assessment or choosing no treatment. No treatment may allow pain, infection or tooth damage to worsen.

Further treatment may include follow-up, retreatment, specialist referral, restorative treatment or extraction. The dentist should explain material risks and alternatives that apply to the individual tooth before treatment.

Aftercare and follow-up

Follow the dentist’s instructions, avoid biting hard on a tooth with an interim restoration, keep the area clean and attend planned stages and follow-up appointments. Contact the clinic if pain or swelling is worsening, the interim restoration comes out, or the tooth fractures.

A root-filled tooth still needs ongoing dental checks and daily cleaning. The final restoration and long-term follow-up are important parts of care.
